Thailand has one party island that deserves the name, and it only fully switches on once a month. Koh Phangan’s Haad Rin beach took about 20,000 people at a 2023 full moon party, by the Bangkok Post’s count, and nothing else in the country gets near that scale. Phi Phi, Samui and Koh Tao are beaches with good bars and a closing time.
That still leaves four islands worth a night or two, and two that are worth the whole trip for the opposite reason. This guide sorts the best party islands in Thailand from the ones that sleep, adds the alcohol and drug rules that changed this year, and says which dates to plan around. For the neighbours across the region, our 10 best islands in Southeast Asia is the wider map.
In this guide
Know this first: pick the coast before you pick the island
Thailand’s two seas have opposite weather. The UK Foreign Office puts the rainy season at May to October across most of the country, but November to March on Koh Samui and the south-east. That is where Phangan, Koh Tao and Samui sit, so both upcoming Full Moon Parties, on 24 November and 24 December, land in the wet months. The tourist board’s Koh Tao page names February to April as the best window. The Andaman side, home to Phi Phi and Koh Yao Noi, runs the other way: dry from November to April.
The second thing to understand is that party islands run on a calendar and quiet islands run on a season. Haad Rin’s nights follow the moon and the Buddhist holiday calendar, and the date can move. Koh Yao Noi and Koh Kood have no calendar to chase, which is the point of them. I would choose the coast for your month first, and only then decide how loud you want the evening to be. A party island needs a beach, a licence and a boat schedule that works at 3am, and Thailand has plenty of islands with one or two of those. The table below sorts the six that matter by night scene, season and the reason to skip each.
| Island | Night scene | Best for | Sea and season | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koh Phangan | Biggest: monthly beach party at Haad Rin | One huge night | Gulf: wet Nov–Mar, drier Feb onwards | You want dry weather in November |
| Koh Samui | Resort strip, licences to 4am | Easy nights, airport access | Gulf: wet Nov–Mar | You want a crowd of thousands |
| Koh Tao | Small: beach bars on Sairee | Diving by day, bars by night | Gulf: best Feb–Apr, per TAT | Diving does not interest you |
| Koh Phi Phi | Loud, small, car-free | Two noisy nights | Andaman: dry Nov–Apr | You need sleep before 2.30am |
| Koh Yao Noi | Almost none | Quiet, village life | Andaman: dry Nov–Apr | A bar strip matters to you |
| Koh Kood | None | Empty beaches, early nights | East Gulf: dry Nov–Apr | Border advice worries your insurer |
Koh Phangan is the best party island in Thailand, but only around the full moon
Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand north of Samui, and its party is a single beach: Haad Rin, at the southern tip, which fills once a month for the Full Moon Party. The tourist board treats nearby Koh Tao as the warm-up or comedown stop for it. The rest of the island runs at a much slower speed.
The Bangkok Post reported police, immigration officers and the provincial governor on the beach at 8pm in 2023, deployed to keep drugs out of a crowd it put at about 20,000. KohPhangan.com, an Australian-owned excursion company based in Thongsala, describes several music zones, fire shows, UV body paint and bucket drinks from sunset to sunrise, with peak nights of 20,000 to 30,000. The Full Moon Party Council site has the dancing starting around 9pm and running to about 7am.
The published schedule gives 24 November and 24 December 2026, plus a New Year’s Eve party on 31 December. Early 2027 dates are provisional, and sites disagree by a day, 21 or 22 February. Entry is 200 baht (about $6) in cash at the beach gate according to two guides, while a third says 100. Sleep on the island, because the ferries stop in the evening.
Both of those dates fall in the Gulf’s wet season, so I would gamble on a February or March moon instead. Rooms inside Haad Rin suit people who do not plan to sleep before sunrise; book elsewhere on the island if you do.
The party moves around Buddhist holidays. Thailand bans retail alcohol sales on the major ones, and in July 2026 the party shifted from the 29th to Friday the 31st. Hotels and licensed entertainment venues are exempt, shops and ordinary restaurants are not. Re-check the date a week out.
- Best for
- Dancing from about 9pm to sunrise
- When
- Full moon nights: 24 Nov, 24 Dec 2026
- Where
- Haad Rin Nok, Ban Tai, Koh Phangan
Koh Samui’s Chaweng is the easy party, with an airport and a 4am licence
Koh Samui is the Gulf’s big island and its gateway, with an airport that feeds the ferries to Phangan and Koh Tao. Chaweng, on the east coast, is the strip: Thai Holiday Guide reports that licensed venues in Samui district may stay open until 4am, depending on each venue’s licence.
In a July 2026 update, Thai Holiday Guide lists Ark Bar Beach Club on central Chaweng Beach as open to 2am, with pool parties on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and free fire shows from 8pm to midnight. It describes the Green Mango Club, on Soi Green Mango, as a two-floor open-air club playing EDM, hip-hop and pop, busiest after midnight. Bangkok Airways’ own nightlife guide puts Green Mango’s hours at 9pm to 4am and calls Lamai the laid-back beach.
Reach Green Mango after midnight, not before. Songthaews stop around 10pm according to Thai Holiday Guide, so pre-arrange a Grab for the ride back, which the airline’s guide also recommends. The Ark Bar pool party is the daylight version of the night, and it ends hours before any club opens. Hours differ slightly between sources, so confirm each evening’s.
Chaweng is a resort strip with a club district bolted on, and no Samui night matches Haad Rin for scale. I would pick the island for logistics and variety, and take the boat to Phangan for the crowd.
- Best for
- Wednesday or Friday pool party, then fire show
- When
- Open to 2am; pool parties 2pm–7pm Wed and Fri
- Where
- Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui
- Best for
- Dancing after midnight on two floors
- When
- From about 9pm; busiest after midnight; to 4am
- Where
- Soi Green Mango, Chaweng, Koh Samui
Koh Tao is the party island for people who dive first and drink after
Koh Tao is, in the tourist board’s words, a tiny island about 45km north of Koh Phangan, and one of Thailand’s top scuba destinations. Sairee Beach is where the bars gather. The board’s own page frames the island as the place young travellers warm up before the Full Moon Party or wind down after it.
Lub d, the hostel brand of Narai Hospitality Group, calls Sairee the island’s nightlife centre, with beachfront bars and fire shows that start after sunset and run late. Chalok Baan Kao, it says, is the calmer beach, with relaxed bars and evening music. The tourist board names no individual bar, and I would read that as the point: the draw is the pairing of a morning on the reef with a night on the sand.
The board’s best window for Koh Tao is February to April. Because the island sits nearer the Chumphon coast than Surat Thani’s, it points travellers to boats from Chumphon. Book the dives first and the evening second. Lub d’s line is to dive in the morning and party at night, and I would go further and keep the drinks until the last dive is logged.
Koh Tao is small, and its draw is the reef. Anyone who wants a crowd of thousands should base on Phangan and treat Tao as the cooldown, which is how the tourist board frames it.
- Best for
- Reef by day, fire shows and beach bars at night
- When
- Evenings; best season Feb–Apr
- Where
- Sairee Beach, Koh Tao
Koh Phi Phi has the loudest small beach in the Andaman, and two nights is plenty
Phi Phi Don, in Krabi province, has no roads or cars, so everything moves on foot, by longtail boat or by luggage cart. The party sits on Loh Dalum Bay, a short walk from the pier village of Ton Sai. It lies on the Andaman side, where the dry season runs from November to April.
Anna, the writer behind Global Gallivanting, found Ton Sai crowded and chaotic and described Loh Dalum’s neon beach bars, fire shows, bucket drinks and thumping music. Phuket 101 says the beach-bar music runs from about 10pm to 2.30am, with Muay Thai bouts staged from about 9pm. It puts dorm beds at 300 to 500 baht ($9 to $15) and private rooms at 1,500 to 3,000 baht ($45 to $90).
Stay one or two nights, and book a room well away from the bay if you want to sleep. Maya Bay is closed every year from 1 August to 30 September; a travel operator quoting the Department of National Parks’ notice gives 1 October 2026 as the reopening, with a 400-baht ($12) fee, one hour on the sand and no swimming. Confirm that before you book a boat.
Phi Phi is a pier town with a beach party attached. Anyone who values sleep before 2.30am should skip the bay entirely, and car-free here means luggage carts, not peace.
Maya Bay is packed from about 10am by Global Gallivanting’s account, with one hour on the sand and no swimming. If the only boat you can get arrives mid-morning, skip it: the 400-baht fee buys you the crowd.
- Best for
- Fire shows, buckets and Muay Thai from 9pm
- When
- Music about 10pm–2.30am; dry Nov–Apr
- Where
- Loh Dalum Bay, Ton Sai village
Koh Yao Noi is the quiet answer: a Muslim fishing island with no bar strip
Koh Yao Noi lies in Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi. Phuket 101 measures it at about 12km by 5km, with roughly 5,000 residents in seven villages, predominantly Muslim, and fishing at the centre of life. The guide from Koyao Island Resort, which operates there, says the island has no nightlife strips.
Phuket 101 lists a west-coast Sunset Bar opening at 4pm, the Sundowner Pirate Bar and a small night market at Tha Khao from about 6 to 8pm, and notes that not every shop sells alcohol. The east-coast beaches are tidal rather than postcard-wide, and low tide disappoints. A 2008 report by the IPS journalist Marwaan Macan-Markar described a community ecotourism club of about 80 families hosting guests in village homes, and its coordinator warning that the model could not work at scale.
Speedboats leave Bang Rong Pier near Phuket for about 300 baht ($9) and 30 minutes, the first at 8.40am and the last at 5pm. From Krabi, boats leave Ao Thalane. Rent a motorbike for 250 to 350 baht a day, cover your shoulders and knees in the villages, and come between November and April: September and October bring boat cancellations.
Evenings come down to a handful of bars and hotel restaurants. If a night out matters, stay on Phi Phi. The community model also depends on visitors who keep numbers low, as its own coordinator said, so book homestays rather than the biggest resort.
- Best for
- Cycling, kayaking and early nights
- When
- Nov–Apr; speedboats 8.40am–5pm from Bang Rong
- Where
- Manoh Pier (Phuket boats) or Tha Khao Pier (Krabi boats)
Koh Kood is the island that sleeps, once you have checked the border advice
Koh Kood (Ko Kut) is in Trat province on the eastern side of the Gulf, near the Cambodian maritime border. Off Path Thailand, updated on 8 October 2026, says it has no beach clubs and no party scene, and names Klong Hin as the longest beach, with calm, shallow water.
Postcards by Hannah, in a guide first written in November 2025 and amended in January 2026, calls the island calm, with no visible military presence and no nightlife scene, and notes that most visitors rent scooters. Bangkok Airways’ Koh Kood guide lists fire-dancing at Ao Prao Beach as the evening entertainment. The Thaiger reported in January 2026 that hotel occupancy had dropped to about 20%.
From Bangkok, Bangkok Airways flies to Trat in about an hour, with fares of 1,800 to 3,500 baht ($53 to $104); a van then runs to Laem Sok pier and the ferry takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Aim for November to April. Off Path says many resorts shut and the seas are rough from May to October.
Check your insurance before you book. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 20km of the land border with Cambodia and its page does not name the islands; the US State Department lists the border at Level 2. Ask your insurer, in writing, whether Trat’s islands are covered.
- Best for
- Empty beaches and early nights
- When
- Nov–Apr; many resorts shut May–Oct
- Where
- Ferry from Laem Sok pier, near Trat
What to eat on the party islands: skip the bucket, find the night market
Every island here has a night market that beats its beach bars on price. The reliable one on Koh Phangan is the Saturday Walking Street in Thong Sala, on Chinese Street near the post office, a short walk from the pier. Koh Samui has its Fisherman’s Village Walking Street in Bophut.
Thai Holiday Guide says the Thong Sala street closes to traffic on Saturday afternoons and fills with som tam (papaya salad), pad thai cooked to order, and grilled fish and squid. Visit Thailand Today’s listing, updated in September 2026, agrees it runs on Saturdays only and warns the ground is uneven in places. Bophut’s street has food, pop-up cocktail bars and street performers, according to the airline’s guide.
Get to Thong Sala by 5pm: Thai Holiday Guide says the queues are shortest and the food best early, and the market runs to about 10pm. Entry is free and cash works almost everywhere. Order the grilled squid and the som tam, and read our guide to Thai street food beyond pad thai for what else to look for.
Sources disagree on Bophut’s market days: Thai Holiday Guide gives Friday only, the airline’s guide gives Sunday to Wednesday and Friday. Ask your hotel. A bucket of spirits is not dinner.
- Best for
- Grilled squid, som tam, pad thai to order
- When
- Saturdays, about 4–5pm to 10pm; arrive by 5pm
- Where
- Chinese Street, near the post office
- Best for
- Street food and a pop-up cocktail
- When
- Evenings; days vary by source, Friday certain
- Where
- Fisherman’s Village, Bophut
The rules that catch visitors out on a Thai island night
Alcohol can be sold from 11am to midnight since 29 May 2026, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s news site, which ends the old afternoon gap. Hotels and licensed entertainment venues sit outside those hours, the drinking age is 20, and carrying ID is wise. Sales stay banned on major Buddhist holidays, The Star reported, with sellers facing up to six months in jail or a 10,000-baht fine.
The UK Foreign Office is blunt about the rest. Cannabis is legal only with a Thai prescription, other drug possession brings heavy fines or prison, and any vape or e-cigarette is illegal, with typical fines of 5,000 to 30,000 baht. It also warns of drink spiking in tourist areas, and of methanol-tainted drinks that cannot be detected by taste. Pre-arrange your ride home, and never hand your passport to a bike or jet-ski rental.
How to combine them: a Gulf loop and an Andaman pair
On the Gulf side, Samui, Phangan and Tao line up along one stretch of water, with Koh Tao about 45km north of Phangan. Start in Samui, time Phangan for the moon and finish by diving off Tao. On the Andaman side, Phi Phi and Koh Yao Noi both reach from Phuket or Krabi, so two nights of noise followed by two of quiet is a workable shape. Mixing the coasts in November means one of them is in its rainy season. Pick the coast, then the island.
| Pick | Best for | Late-night scene | Best months | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haad Rin Beach (Full Moon Party) | One huge night | Sunset to sunrise, monthly | Feb–Mar, drier Gulf | ฿ |
| Ark Bar Beach Club | Daytime pool party, fire show | Open to 2am | Feb–Aug, Gulf | ฿฿ |
| The Green Mango Club | Dancing after midnight | From about 9pm to 4am | Feb–Aug, Gulf | ฿฿ |
| Sairee Beach | Diving, then bars | Beach bars, fire shows | Feb–Apr, per TAT | ฿฿ |
| Loh Dalum Bay beach bars | Two noisy nights | Music about 10pm–2.30am | Nov–Apr, Andaman | ฿฿ |
| Koh Yao Noi | Village life, cycling | A few bars, early nights | Nov–Apr, Andaman | Unrated |
| Koh Kood (Ko Kut) | Empty beaches | None | Nov–Apr, eastern Gulf | Unrated |
| Thong Sala Saturday Walking Street | Cheap dinner | Saturdays until about 10pm | Year-round, weekly | ฿ |
| Fisherman’s Village Walking Street | Street food, cocktails | Evenings, days vary | Year-round | ฿ |
฿ means the thing you pay for directly, a gate fee or a street-food plate, comes in under 400 baht ($12). ฿฿ means a room or a night out runs to 1,500 baht ($45) or more, going by Phuket 101’s Phi Phi room range of 1,500 to 3,000 baht. Sources publish no room rates for Koh Yao Noi or Koh Kood, so those are unrated. Gulf months follow the Foreign Office and tourist board; Andaman months follow Phuket 101.
Thai party island practicalities: weather, ferries, money and safety
When to go: February to April is the safest window for the Gulf islands, with the Foreign Office putting their rainy season at November to March. The Andaman side is the reverse, dry from November to April. Our month-by-month guide to Southeast Asia has the wider picture.
Getting around: Samui to Phangan is a short boat ride. Koh Tao is reached by sea, and the tourist board points to Chumphon. On the islands, Grab and taxis beat self-drive. The Foreign Office says hire bikes are often unregistered, that a helmet is mandatory, and that British riders need a 1968 international permit with their licence.
Money: Budget on about 33.7 baht to the US dollar, the rate on 1 October 2026. The Haad Rin gate, the night markets and most small bars take cash, so carry notes.
Booking: Book Haad Rin rooms early for any party week and ferries a day ahead in the rainy months. Resorts on Koh Kood shut from May to October.
How long: Four nights covers Samui and Phangan for one party. Add three on Koh Tao for diving. Pair Phi Phi with Koh Yao Noi for a week on the Andaman side.
Safety: The US State Department rates Thailand at Level 1, with Level 2 for the Cambodia border and three southern provinces, as of July 2026. The Foreign Office page was current on 11 October 2026 and its flooding warning covers Bangkok and nearby provinces. Our Southeast Asia scam guide and backpacking guide cover the usual traps.
Best party islands in Thailand: questions people ask
What is the best party island in Thailand?
Koh Phangan, on a full moon night. Haad Rin’s Full Moon Party drew about 20,000 people at one 2023 event according to the Bangkok Post, and no other Thai island matches that scale. For smaller, easier nights, Chaweng on Koh Samui and Sairee Beach on Koh Tao are the next choices.
When is the next Full Moon Party?
24 November 2026 and 24 December 2026, with a New Year’s Eve party on 31 December, according to the party’s published schedule. Early 2027 dates are provisional, and sites differ by a day for February. Dates move around Buddhist holidays, as in July 2026, so check again a week before you travel.
Is Koh Samui or Koh Phangan better for partying?
Koh Phangan wins on scale and Koh Samui on convenience. Phangan has the monthly beach party; Samui has an airport, venues licensed to run until 4am and a club district on Chaweng. I would base on Samui for logistics and cross to Phangan for the moon.
Which Thai islands are quiet?
Koh Yao Noi and Koh Kood. Koh Yao Noi is a predominantly Muslim fishing island with no bar strip, and Koh Kood has no beach clubs or party scene according to Off Path Thailand. Both are best from November to April, and Koh Kood needs a border-advice check with your insurer first.
Can you buy alcohol at any time on Thai islands?
No. Retail alcohol may be sold from 11am to midnight since 29 May 2026, with exemptions for hotels, airports and licensed entertainment venues. Sales are also banned on major Buddhist holidays. The drinking age is 20, so carry ID, and avoid drinking in temples, parks and on public transport.
Are vapes legal on Thai islands?
No. The UK Foreign Office says possessing or using any vape, e-cigarette or heat-not-burn device is illegal, with typical fines of 5,000 to 30,000 baht and possible court proceedings that can keep you in the country. It lists no exceptions for tourists, so leave the device at home.
The Bottom Line
Pick the night first and the island second. If you want the one Thai party that justifies the flight, go to Haad Rin on a full moon, and be honest about the weather in November and December. If you want easy evenings, Chaweng and Sairee Beach do the job with less theatre. Phi Phi is for two nights. The two quiet islands are for people who have had enough of buckets, and on Koh Yao Noi the villages, not the visitors, still set the pace. Learn the alcohol rules before you land.
Check the full moon date, then book the boat.
