Thailand nightlife in Bangkok: the city skyline illuminated beside the river

Midnight on Bangla Road in Patong, and two clocks are running. In the nearest 7-Eleven the beer fridge has just gone off limits, because Thai shops may sell alcohol from 11am to midnight and no later. Outside, the street has been closed to traffic since 6pm and the big clubs at the far end are licensed until 4am. A can of Singha that costs about 45 baht ($1.40) in the shop is 150 to 180 baht across a club bar, on EVE Phuket’s May 2026 prices.

That gap between the shop and the dance floor explains Thailand nightlife better than any list of clubs. What you can do after dark depends on the licence a venue holds and the zone it sits in, and both change from one base to the next. So this guide runs base by base: Bangkok for bars, Phuket for a beach-club sunset or one loud night, Pattaya for an evening away from its most famous street, and the Gulf islands for a beach party with a published calendar. I’ll say which I’d choose, and what I’d skip.

In short
4amlatest close, licensed zones only
20legal drinking age
200 bahtFull Moon Party wristband
For bars, base yourself in Bangkok: start on Soi Nana in Chinatown, then book one of the eight bars on Asia’s 50 Best list.
In Phuket I’d give Bangla Road one night and spend the others at a sunset beach club or in Old Town.
Pattaya earns an evening only if you swap Walking Street for a rooftop, a band and the weekend market.
After October, the next Full Moon Parties are 24 November and 24 December 2026. Carry ID everywhere, and leave the vape at home: it is illegal.

Know this first: in Thailand the licence sets your night, and the calendar can cancel it

Three rules shape every night out here. First, the clock. Since 29 May 2026 alcohol may be sold from 11am to midnight, the old 2pm to 5pm ban having been dropped for good, as the Tourism Authority’s newsroom sets out. That covers shops, restaurants and ordinary bars. Later service belongs to hotels and licensed entertainment venues, and a 4am close is legal only in designated zones of Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri (the province that holds Pattaya), Chiang Mai and Koh Samui, under a 2023 regulation summarised by The Nation.

In Bangkok that means Silom, RCA and Ratchadaphisek, plus hotel venues. The motive is money: the government pitched longer hours as tax revenue and tourist spending, and in late 2025 the prime minister proposed scrapping the zones altogether. Everything I found from 2026 still describes zones, so assume they stand.

Second, the calendar. On the main Buddhist holy days shops sell no alcohol for 24 hours and many bars shut; the next is Ok Phansa on Monday 26 October 2026, and election days bring bans of their own. Third, your paperwork. The legal drinking age is 20, staff can ask for ID, and vapes are illegal for everyone, tourists included. Each base handles these rules differently, which is why the table below matters more than any single bar. For the wider region, our city-by-city guide to nightlife in Southeast Asia sets Thailand against its neighbours.

Bangkok nightlife starts in Chinatown, on a lane called Soi Nana

A lane of old shophouses in Chinatown, Soi Nana packs more than a dozen small bars into one street and the alleys beside it: Time Out Thailand’s Kaweewat Siwanartwong listed 14 in March 2026. Most open at about 6pm and shut by 1am, which makes this the early half of a Bangkok night.

Teens of Thailand, at number 76, set the tone: a gin bar with 15 seats and bare cement walls, where the tonics are infused with Thai tea, chrysanthemum or salted guava. Punch’s Andrew Parks, writing back in 2017, called it the trendiest bar on the soi and warned of a wait for a table. Nearby, Tep Bar builds its cocktails on Thai herbal liqueurs and Mekhong, and a semi-traditional band plays from around 10pm. One alley over, G.O.D serves a sea-urchin martini for 580 baht (about $18).

I’d be there at 6pm, as the daytime shops pull their gates down, and take Teens of Thailand first while a stool is free. Describe what you like, sour and herbal or bitter and fruity, and let the bartender improvise. Move to Tep Bar by 9.30pm to be seated before the music, order the rice crackers, and finish at G.O.D, which pours until 1am. Three bars is plenty; the fourth is rarely anyone’s best decision.

These rooms are tiny. At one neighbour, the same list warns, a group of more than four can wait half an hour, so come as a pair. Bangkok also has a second, unrelated Soi Nana off Sukhumvit Road: say Chinatown to the driver.

Bangkok’s best cocktail bars: book one from the 50 Best list, not all three

Eight Bangkok bars made Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, announced in Macau in July, and three finished in the top ten, BK Magazine reported. They are scattered across the city. Dry Wave Cocktail Studio, at number four, is upstairs in Thonglor; Bar Us, at six, is on Sukhumvit Soi 26; BKK Social Club, at 20, is inside the Four Seasons on the river.

The list’s own write-ups do the describing. Dry Wave has wave-patterned walls, a curved marble bar and a menu that fuses two classics in one glass: its 1806-1988 crosses a bourbon old fashioned with a cosmopolitan. Bar Us is an almost all-black room where the staff wear white lab coats and the menu runs in courses, starters to afters. Both are home-grown, the first the project of a bartender, the second of two former interior designers. BKK Social Club is the grand hotel version, Art Deco with a menu built around Mexico City.

Choose by where you are sleeping, because Bangkok traffic turns a three-bar plan into a taxi tour. From a Sukhumvit hotel I’d book Bar Us and keep Dry Wave for another night; from the river, BKK Social Club is the easy one, open 5pm to midnight daily on the hotel’s listing. Our guide to where to stay in Bangkok shows how the neighbourhoods connect. Given the choice, my money goes to the two independents.

None of the three published a cocktail price in the pages I checked, so read the menu before a second round. Scenes move quickly, too: the same magazine reported the closure of the cocktail bar Find the Locker Room in August 2026. All three shut long before the 4am zones get going.

The move

If the top-ten names are full, the list’s 51 to 100 extension has four more Bangkok bars: Vesper at 56, Messenger Service at 69, Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar at 76 and Firefly at 78. Messenger Service comes from the Bar Us team.

Phuket nightlife peaks on Bangla Road, and one night there is enough

Every evening at 6pm Bangla Road in Patong closes to vehicles and becomes a walking strip of beer bars, live-music rooms and clubs. Willy Thuan of Phuket 101, who has lived on the island since 1994, calls it the heart of Phuket nightlife. Part of the trade is adult venues, which this guide leaves out. Licensed clubs can run to 4am in high season, November to May; smaller bars close around 2am.

Illuzion is the headline act: a large EDM and house club with VIP areas, open from 9pm to 4am, with entry at 300 to 600 baht ($9 to $18) that usually includes a drink, on EVE Phuket’s figures. For bands, Thuan points to New York Live Music Bar, where buying one drink covers the concert, though he is blunt that the quality of bands along the strip varies. A local beer runs 80 to 150 baht in most bars.

I’d walk the length of it once at about 9pm, take the first drink at a live-music bar and only then decide whether a club is worth the door charge. Order at the bar yourself and agree the price first. Bring cash, since ATMs on the strip add 200 to 220 baht a withdrawal, and book the ride home on Grab or Bolt: Thuan says tuk-tuk fares double or triple after midnight.

Leave the bell above the beer bar alone. Ringing it buys the whole room a round, about 1,000 baht ($30), and nobody will stop you; it may be the most expensive instrument in Phuket. Performers who invite a photo expect payment afterwards.

Heads up

A 24-hour Tourist Police station sits at the foot of Bangla Road. The Tourist Police number is 1155 and the general emergency number is 191. Save both before you go out, along with your hotel’s address in Thai.

Phuket beach clubs are a sunset plan: arrive at four, leave by midnight

A Phuket beach club is a restaurant, a pool and a DJ booth on the sand, and the island has dozens: Thuan’s running list, updated on 4 October 2026, covers 31. They line the west coast from Karon up to Bang Tao. Beach clubs and rooftop bars usually wind down around midnight, he notes, hours before the Patong clubs.

Catch Beach Club on Bang Tao is his example of the type done properly: DJs in the evening during high season, a crowd that mixes residents and visitors without feeling stiff, a kids’ club next door, and high prices that he says buy the setting. Café del Mar on Kamala is the loud one, built on an Ibiza model with theme parties and packed weekends. His advice to anyone wanting quiet there is to come before 4pm or go elsewhere.

Catch sells the day as credit, not entry. Sunbeds and daybeds come with a food-and-drink allowance, listed at 4,000 for one person and 8,000 for a front-row pair, and day passes run from 11am to 6pm. The site prints no currency; I read it as baht, so roughly $120 a head. In high season book two or three days ahead for a sunset slot, dress smart casual after dark, and take Thuan’s hint about leaving the flip-flops behind.

This is the most expensive night in the guide and the least Thai. Several Bang Tao clubs have closed, Thuan warns, and the floating clubs off Patong operate in high season only, so confirm your pick is trading before crossing the island for it.

Phuket Old Town is the night out I’d choose over Patong

Phuket Town sits across the island from the west-coast beaches: EVE Phuket prices a Grab between town and Bangla Road at 350 to 450 baht ($11 to $14) and 45 to 60 minutes. Its old quarter of Sino-Portuguese shophouses has turned into the island’s cocktail district, small rooms on Dibuk, Phang Nga and Thep Krasattri roads.

Dibuk House is the name most people give for cocktails here, according to Esquire India’s Abhya Adlakha, who in April 2026 judged its drinks a match for Bangkok’s and ordered the Last Living to Survive: gin, white crème de cacao and Thai tea. At Z1mplex, on the quiet end of Phang Nga Road, bartenders in lab coats mix with laboratory glassware. Thuan’s newer find is So Xorry, behind a red door, with live music nightly and cocktails from 250 baht ($7.50).

Come on a Sunday. The Lard Yai walking street market fills Thalang Road from 4pm to about 9pm, most food costs 30 to 80 baht, and Thuan’s tip is to be there between 5 and 6pm, before the crowd makes walking a chore. Eat at the stalls, start at Dibuk House when it opens at 7pm, and reach Z1mplex after eight.

Old Town keeps early hours. The listings I found have these bars closing at midnight or 1am, and one set dates from 2023, so check before you go. Anyone sleeping on the west coast should price the ride home before ordering a second drink.

Pattaya nightlife without Walking Street: a rooftop, a band and a market

Pattaya’s name is tied to Walking Street, a traffic-free strip that Pattaya Pointer’s Maia Reyes sums up as ‘Loud, chaotic, worth seeing once’. Much of it is adult entertainment, which is outside this guide. A second Pattaya exists, and The Pattaya Guide gave it a full page in June 2026, observing that the city’s reputation rests on about four streets.

Horizon, on level 34 of the Hilton above Beach Road, is the sunset option: bay views, cocktails at its Infinity Bar and a DJ every evening, by the hotel’s own description. The Pattaya Guide calls the dinner menu divisive, so I’d drink there and eat elsewhere. For bands it sends readers to Rock Factory on Soi Buakhao, where rotating acts take requests, and it names Backstreet House, a north Pattaya garden with jazz at talking volume, as its editor’s pick.

My Pattaya evening runs in this order. Horizon at sunset, with a booking; rooftop cocktails cost 300 to 450 baht ($9 to $14). Then a ride to Thepprasit Night Market, open Friday to Sunday, where Reyes found street food at 40 to 80 baht and seafood plates at 150 to 300 in July 2026. Finish with a band on Soi Buakhao, and use a ride-hailing app between stops.

I’d skip Walking Street. If curiosity wins, refuse anyone waving a laminated card of show prices. Check each bill, because service charge and VAT are added inconsistently, and note that Thepprasit is a weekend market: midweek visitors get Jomtien’s calmer one instead.

The Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan: go once, and check the date first

Once a month Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, at the south-east tip of Koh Phangan, hosts the Full Moon Party. The calendar is issued by Haad Rin’s village and business committees on their official dates page. Entry is a wristband bought for cash at the beach gates, about 200 baht ($6), money meant to fund the clean-up, and the island site Koh Phangan Life says no legitimate advance tickets exist.

That site sketches the night. Bars open in the early evening, the sand fills from about 9pm, the peak runs from midnight to 4am, and most people leave between six and ten the next morning. Buckets of spirits and mixer are the standard order, at 300 to 400 baht on one tour operator’s September 2026 figures and stronger than they look. Fire ropes are part of the show, and the advice is closed shoes because of broken glass underfoot.

Dates first. In March 2026 the committees ruled that a party falling on a major Buddhist holy day moves to the following night, which is why October’s is on the 27th, the day after Ok Phansa. Next come 24 November, 24 December, a New Year’s Eve countdown and 22 January 2027. Haad Rin rooms often require three to five nights at about double the usual rate; Baan Tai and Thong Sala are cheaper, a 200-baht songthaew ride away.

The British government’s safety advice says violent assaults in tourist areas are most common during full moon parties and near bars late at night, and warns of drink spiking. I’d drink sealed beer, leave the buckets to others and stay out of the sea, which has strong currents and no lifeguards.

Heads up

Koh Phangan has no airport. Routes run through Koh Samui, 30 to 45 minutes away by ferry, or Surat Thani, about two hours. After sunrise the demand for rides out of Haad Rin peaks and prices rise, so arrange your return before the first drink.

Koh Samui nightlife: sleep in Fisherman’s Village, visit Chaweng

Samui is the only Gulf island named in the 4am regulation, which lists Ko Samui district beside Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri and Chiang Mai. Its nightlife concentrates in Chaweng, which Rough Guides describes as running ‘from tawdry bar-beers to hip nightclubs’ and as the most expensive place on the island to stay.

Ark Bar is the Chaweng beach party in its plainest form. Its own schedule lists free entry, a beach club open from 10am to 2am, DJs and an hourly fire show from 8pm, and pool parties on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is the gentler evening: Fodor’s describes Coco Tam’s there as reliably packed every night, with beanbags and giant cushions on the sand, reasonably priced cocktails and pizzas from Peppina.

I’d sleep in Bophut and visit Chaweng, which reverses the usual plan. Take a beanbag at Coco Tam’s for sunset, and keep Ark Bar for a single evening of dancing on sand: turn up after 8pm, when the DJs start, and expect to be finished by 2am. Samui also works as the staging post for Haad Rin. Party boats cost 400 to 600 baht return, and the return leg should be booked in advance.

Weather is the catch. Samui and the south-east get their rain from about November to March, the Foreign Office notes, and Rough Guides puts the heaviest in November, when most of the country is drying out. Ark Bar’s New Year’s Eve is ticketed, from 500 baht standing.

What to eat and drink after midnight on a Thai night out

A Thai night out runs on food as much as on drink, and the food is the cheaper half. On Soi Nana, Punch’s correspondent listed hoi tod (a crisp oyster pancake), khao gaeng (curry over rice) and kuay jab (a spicy pork soup) as the plastic-stool dishes that begin or end many Saturday nights; our guide to Bangkok street food explains each. Near Bangla Road, Thuan sends people to Malin Plaza and Banzaan Market. In Pattaya, The Pattaya Guide’s pick is Moom Aroi in Naklua, known for a sizzling oyster omelette and, it admits, not cheap.

Night markets make the easiest dinner before drinking, and I’d take one over a bar kitchen: 30 to 80 baht a plate at Lard Yai, 40 to 80 at Thepprasit. Our list of night market dishes across Southeast Asia says what to order first, and Thai street food beyond pad thai what to hunt for next. One rule shapes the drinking. Shops stop selling alcohol at midnight, so a late beer has to come from a licensed bar, at bar prices.

Thailand nightlife practicalities: seasons, floods, the law and getting home

When to go: The rainy season generally runs from May to October, with Koh Samui and the south-east wet from about November to March, so December to April is the safe window for a trip covering both coasts. Our month-by-month guide to Southeast Asia has the detail. For 2027, the official Full Moon calendar flags Buddhist holy days on 21 February, 20 May, 18 and 19 July and 15 October: expect dry days.

Bangkok after the floods: Late September’s rain flooded parts of the capital and all 50 districts were declared disaster areas. By 30 September Time Out Bangkok’s Aydan Stuart found Silom, Sathorn and Sukhumvit accessible, bars open and the BTS and MRT running. The Foreign Office page still carried its flood notice on 11 October, so check before a long ride across town, and be patient with staff: some were working while their own homes were under water.

Getting home: Book Grab or Bolt before the last drink; in Patong, surge pricing starts after 1am at weekends and drivers thin out after 2am. Leave the rented scooter parked. Thailand is among the world’s deadliest countries for motorcyclists, and a rider without the right licence is usually uninsured.

Money: Dollar figures here use about 33 baht to the US dollar. Carry cash for beer bars, markets and wristbands, and read every bill.

The law: Police can ask for your passport; a copy of the photo page usually satisfies them. Vapes and e-cigarettes are illegal, with fines of 5,000 to 30,000 baht. Cannabis needs a Thai prescription, and possession of Class A drugs can carry the death penalty.

Safety: Drink spiking happens to men and women in tourist areas, and the British advice on methanol is blunt: ‘Even small amounts of methanol can kill.’ The US keeps Thailand at Level 1. Both governments warn about the Cambodian border zone and the far south, neither of which is on this route.

Thailand nightlife: questions people ask

What time do bars and clubs close in Thailand?

Most bars close between midnight and 2am, and only licensed entertainment venues in designated zones may stay open until 4am. Those zones are in Bangkok, Phuket, Chon Buri province (which covers Pattaya), Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. Shops, including 7-Eleven, stop selling alcohol at midnight and start again at 11am. Beach clubs and rooftop bars usually finish around midnight.

What is the legal drinking age in Thailand?

The legal drinking age is 20, for Thais and foreigners alike. Bars, clubs and shops can ask for ID, and police may ask to see a passport; the British government says a copy of the photo page is usually enough. When 4am closing arrived in Patong, officials announced ID checkpoints on Bangla Road to keep under-20s out.

Is vaping or cannabis legal for tourists in Thailand?

No. Possessing or using any vape, e-cigarette or heat-not-burn device is illegal, with fines typically between 5,000 and 30,000 baht and no exception for tourists, according to British government advice. Cannabis is restricted to medical use and needs a prescription issued in Thailand, limited to a 30-day supply. Recreational use is illegal, and so is taking it out of the country.

When is the next Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan?

After the party on 27 October 2026, the dates are 24 November, 24 December, a New Year’s Eve countdown on 31 December and 22 January 2027. They come from the Haad Rin committees’ official calendar. Since March 2026 a party that falls on a major Buddhist holy day moves to the following night, so check the calendar before booking ferries.

Is Bangkok nightlife open after the September 2026 floods?

Yes, in the central districts. Time Out Bangkok reported on 30 September 2026 that Silom, Sathorn and Sukhumvit were accessible, with bars and restaurants operating normally and the BTS, MRT and Airport Rail Link running. Some eastern neighbourhoods stayed under water longer and more thunderstorms were forecast, so check local news and allow extra time for airport transfers.

Can you buy alcohol on Buddhist holidays in Thailand?

Mostly not. On the main Buddhist holy days shops, supermarkets and convenience stores sell no alcohol for 24 hours, and many ordinary bars close. Licensed hotels, international airport terminals and some entertainment venues are exempt, so service depends on the licence. The next dry day is Ok Phansa on 26 October 2026, and similar bans apply around elections.

The Bottom Line

Thailand makes it easy to have the wrong night, because the loudest street is always the best advertised. Choose the base for the evening you want instead. Bangkok has the bars, and the ones I’d send you to first are on a Chinatown lane and shut by 1am. Phuket is at its best at sunset and in Old Town. Pattaya can be a good evening if you ignore its headline act, and Koh Phangan throws one party a month that is worth seeing once, sober enough to remember it. Know the licence, carry ID, and book the ride home before the last round.

Check the Full Moon calendar before you book a flight.
