Best Food Cities in Southeast Asia: How We Compare Them

Three tests set the order

It is 3am at Huai Khwang, on the pavement by exit 4 of the MRT, and you are on your second bowl of khao tom. The rice soup costs ฿50, about $1.55, by Destination Thailand's count, and the stalls on either side are still turning out grilled chicken, larb and som tam for ฿60 to ฿120 a plate. Nobody here thinks the hour is strange. A city that feeds people this well at this time of night is hard to beat, which is why Bangkok sits first on this list.

The ranking covers seven of the best food cities in Southeast Asia and is built on what decides a food trip: how much good eating a visitor can reach in a few days, what it costs, and how late or early the kitchens work. VnExpress International's list of nine Asian food cities for 2026, published on 10 October, names five in Southeast Asia. I've kept four, left Manila out for want of sourced kitchens, and added three cities of my own. Expect to disagree with the order.

✓

Bangkok comes first for range, price and hours: plates from ฿60 (about $1.85), served until the small hours.

✓

Penang is second and Hanoi third. With one long weekend, I'd spend it in Penang.

✓

Ho Chi Minh City is fourth and Singapore fifth, for layered noodles and public-service hawker centres.

✓

Huế and Chiang Mai finish the list: one great bowl each, best as a short stop.

What the ranking is actually measuring

A street vendor cooking over a wok at a night market in BangkokLate hours — Bangkok feeds you when other cities have shut
A hand lifting noodles with chopsticks from a bowl of Asian soupRange — one bowl done properly, in a hundred shops
A Thai green papaya salad served in a white dish on a wooden tableAnd price, which is the quiet test underneath both

Three tests set the order: how many distinct dishes a visitor can reach in a few days, what a meal costs, and how late or early the kitchens work. Tasting menus count for nothing here. VnExpress International mentions Ho Chi Minh City's CieL and Penang's Au Jardin, a restaurant in a former bus depot that pairs French technique with local flavours, and both are fair reasons to book a table. The order, though, is decided by a plate of rice and curry. Cities that are strong on one dish and thin on range, Huế and Chiang Mai, finish at the bottom for that reason. It is a verdict on range, not on the bowl.

Read the cards with the sources in mind. I've leaned on local press, the venues' own pages and official bodies, and used Michelin listings only as proof that a kitchen is open. Where just one source stood up, the card says Needs confirming, and in Penang, Singapore's Maxwell and Ho Chi Minh City that is most of them. Check hours and prices on the day. Where two sources disagreed I say so in the text. Manila appears on VnExpress's list but is absent here because I could not verify specific kitchens there.

Bangkok: first, because it feeds you at 3am

Huai Khwang after Jodd Fairs closes

Bangkok's cheapest serious eating happens after dark, and two night markets are worth planning around. Huai Khwang is a strip of late-night stalls around exit 4 of MRT Huai Khwang. Jodd Fairs Ratchada is the larger market on Ratchadaphisek Road, beside Big C and a short walk from Thailand Cultural Centre station. They suit different halves of the evening.

Destination Thailand's guide prices Huai Khwang's Isan grilled chicken, larb and som tam at ฿60 to ฿120 a plate (about $1.85 to $3.70), with khao tom, a rice soup, at ฿50 for the 3am crowd. At Jodd Fairs it points to leng saap, pork spine in a lime-and-chilli broth, at about ฿300 for the small pot and ฿1,000 for the tower, plus river prawns at ฿250 to ฿400 a plate. Its advice is to arrive around 5pm on a weekday, before the 7pm to 9pm peak.

A busy Bangkok street market hung with colourful signs and full of peopleThe market hours are the argument: Bangkok is still cooking when the rest of the region has closed.

Start at Jodd Fairs around 5pm, order the small leng saap and one plate of prawns, and expect to pay ฿550 to ฿700 (roughly $17 to $22) between two before beer, which runs ฿100 to ฿160. The same guide has Jodd Fairs closing around midnight, so finish with the MRT to Huai Khwang for the late round. Our Bangkok food guide covers the daytime kitchens this list skips.

Jodd Fairs plates run ฿80 to ฿150 and the tables fill after 7pm. Huai Khwang's closing time is the loose end: the guide says 4am or 5am, so confirm it on the night.

Heads up On 28 September the said all 50 Bangkok districts had been declared disaster-affected after flooding. On 29 September reported conditions had improved, with Chinatown, the BTS and the MRT running. Check both before you fly. UK Foreign Office Thailand's tourism authority

Penang: second, four communities in one old port

George Town, and nasi kandar at lunch

UNESCO inscribed George Town, with Melaka, in 2008 as a port shaped by roughly 500 years of trade, and its text counts food among the living heritage of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influence. The kitchens follow those communities: asam laksa from the Peranakan Chinese, nasi kandar from Tamil Muslim traders.

According to Wikipedia's nasi kandar entry, itinerant Indian Muslim vendors sold curry and rice to dock workers at Weld Quay in the early 1900s, and the plate is still built that way: steamed rice, a choice of sides, mixed gravies poured over the top in a style called banjir, "flooded". The same entry names Hameediyah, which began under a tree on Lebuh Campbell in 1907, as Penang's oldest nasi kandar restaurant. VnExpress International adds the noodle side: wok-fried flat rice noodles and a tangy fish soup.

Four kitchens, one port

A plate of nasi lemak with rice, sambal, egg and peanutsNasi lemak, the other plate the island runs on
A Thai chicken rice set with fresh vegetables and a fried eggAnd chicken rice, which every community claims

Take nasi kandar at lunch, ask for the mixed gravy, and point at two or three sides rather than the whole counter. Follow it later with Penang laksa, which Wikipedia's Penang cuisine entry describes as a tamarind-based fish soup with thick round rice noodles. The same entry puts Line Clear, another nasi kandar name, off Penang Road. I could find no current prices or opening days for either, so check at the counter.

Both cards rest on a single encyclopedia entry, which is why they are marked Needs confirming. Hameediyah's own website is still a launch page, so the 1907 start is the entry's claim, not the restaurant's.

Hanoi: third, because the best shops cook one thing

Phở before 8.30am, and nothing else on the menu

A Ministry of Culture decision put phở Hà Nội on Vietnam's national intangible heritage list, and VietNamNet counted nearly 700 phở shops in the city as of 2023. That density is the case for the rank. Phở Gia Truyền Bát Đàn, at 49 Bát Đàn in the Old Quarter, is the one with the queue.

Mia describes a self-service room: order and pay at the counter, carry the bowl yourself, choose indoors or the courtyard, with the suggestion to sit outside at breakfast for air and less smell in your clothes. The beef comes tái (rare), chín (cooked) or nạm (flank), and crisp quẩy, fried dough sticks, are there for dipping. VietNamNet adds that the queue peaks between 8.30am and 9.30am and that Michelin gave the shop a Bib Gourmand in 2023 and 2024.

A Vietnamese noodle soup garnished with fresh herbs, seen close upOne bowl, cooked by a shop that has never served anything else.

Arrive before 8.30am and order phở tái with quẩy on the side. Mia advises going in twos, one to queue and one to hold a table. It puts a bowl at 55,000₫ to 70,000₫ (about $2.10 to $2.70) and VietNamNet at 50,000₫ to 60,000₫, so budget the higher figure. Both give morning hours and an evening session, with different closing times. Our Hanoi food guide covers the rest of the day.

Carrying a hot bowl through a crowd is part of the deal. Mia also gives the shop's age as over 100 years in one line and about 70 in another, so I'd enjoy the story and not repeat the number.

Ho Chi Minh City: fourth, a city built by arrivals

Hủ tiếu at breakfast, seafood after dark

VnExpress International credits Ho Chi Minh City with street food and with young chefs who rework Vietnamese ingredients on seasonal menus, naming CieL and ST25 by KOTO. The street layer carries the older story, and hủ tiếu Nam Vang, a pork-broth noodle soup that came from Cambodia, tells it best.

Saigoneer traces the soup to Cambodian immigrants who brought a richer kuy teav to the south in the 1960s. Most vendors today are người Hoa, Vietnamese of Chinese descent, and the usual bowl holds chewy rice noodles, minced pork, shrimp or squid, spring onions, bean sprouts and tần ô, crown daisy. Phnom Penh's version usually skips seafood. Liến Húa, on Võ Văn Tần, is run by a Cambodian woman with about 40 years at it, and Ty Lum, on Thành Thái, by a former chef to the Khmer royal family.

A Thai curry noodle bowl topped with shrimp tempuraCurry noodles, from further down the same coast
A spread of Vietnamese dishes served together on a tableAnd the spread that arrives when nobody orders separately

Take the hủ tiếu at breakfast, then save the evening for Vĩnh Khánh Street. Michelin lists Ốc Oanh at 534 Vĩnh Khánh, open daily 1pm to 3am, with whelks, tiger prawns, lobster, octopus and crab, outdoors with no air conditioning, cash only. Our Ho Chi Minh City street food list fills in the rest.

Saigoneer gives Liến Húa's street but no house number, and Ốc Oanh rests on a single listing, so both cards say Needs confirming. Ask the price of anything sold whole before it reaches the grill.

Singapore: fifth, hawker centres run as public service

103 stalls inside Maxwell

Singapore's hawker culture joined UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. The listing calls the centres "community dining rooms" where people of different backgrounds eat side by side, and notes that many hawkers specialise in one dish and pass the recipe to family or apprentices.

Wikipedia puts 103 hawkers inside Maxwell Food Centre, at the corner of Maxwell and South Bridge roads. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, run by Mr and Mrs Loy Chee San, was the first stall there to win a Bib Gourmand, in 2016. Lau Pa Sat, at 18 Raffles Quay, was a fish market from 1824 before becoming a hawker centre in 1972, and its own site lists more than 80 stalls, round-the-clock opening and live music from Friday to Sunday, 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

I'd take Maxwell for the stalls, since single-dish cooks sit under one roof, and Lau Pa Sat for the late hour. Maxwell is served by four MRT stations: Maxwell, Telok Ayer, Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar. I couldn't find stall hours or current prices for either place, so confirm which stalls are open before you set out hungry.

Lau Pa Sat has been a festival market since 1991 and its site now leads with Race Weekend promotions, running to 11 October. I'd skip it at lunch and use it only after dark.

Huế: sixth, and it earns it with one bowl

Bún bò Huế, at breakfast

Bún bò Huế is rice vermicelli in a broth scented with lemongrass and fermented shrimp paste. Mia lists seven shops, with bowls from 25,000₫ to 40,000₫ (about $0.95 to $1.55), though it does not date the prices.

At Bún Bò Mệ Kéo, on Bạch Đằng, Mia says the bowl carries no beef slices at all. Its toppings are crab cake, chả cua, blood cake, huyết, and pork belly cut with both lean and fat, in a broth it calls rich, with a clear mắm and lemongrass note. Bún Bò O Phượng, on Nguyễn Khuyến, gets a different description: a lemongrass and ruốc broth made by simmering the toppings in it, rich, lightly sweet and balanced.

Treat Mệ Kéo as breakfast. Mia has it open from 6am to 10am at 25,000₫ to 35,000₫, and I'd go early and order the crab cake and pork. O Phượng, at 30,000₫ to 40,000₫, is the later option by Mia's count, open from 9am to 9pm. Go before noon to be safe, because an earlier listing gave it much shorter hours.

Mệ Kéo's bowl has no beef despite the bò in its name, so ask what's in it. Huế sits sixth because it is a one-bowl city on my evidence, and I'd treat it as a two-day stop.

Chiang Mai: one khao soi stall, and a short window

Go at opening, 10am

Chiang Mai's signature is khao soi, noodles in a curry broth, and our own Chiang Mai food guide runs through fifteen northern dishes beyond it. The stall that earns a place here is Khao Soi Khun Yai, in front of Wat Kuan Kama on Sri Poom Road in the Old City.

Mark Wiens, reviewing it on Eating Thai Food, notes that the sign is in Thai only but sits on the main road. He found the broth brown-red, neither too milky nor too oily, the gravy flavourful rather than sweet, the fried-noodle topping used sparingly and the portions small enough to eat several bowls. Roasted chilli flakes are on the table. He rates it 10 out of 10 and calls it the best khao soi he had eaten in a very long time.

Go at opening, 10am, because the page gives 2pm as closing. A bowl cost ฿30 with chicken or ฿35 with beef (about $0.90 to $1.10) when Wiens paid. Order two small bowls, one of each, and add chilli flakes to the second. Chiang Mai is one of the destinations Thailand's tourism authority listed as open after the September floods.

The page says daily and also says closed Sundays, so treat Sunday as shut. One stall does not make a food city, and my sources let me stand behind only this one.

One meal: Huai Khwang after Jodd Fairs closes

If the trip allows a single sitting

If the trip allows a single sitting from this list, mine is the late round at Huai Khwang. Jodd Fairs is done around midnight, according to Destination Thailand, while Huai Khwang runs on until 4am or 5am, and its Isan grilled chicken, larb and som tam cost ฿60 to ฿120 a plate. Order the chicken and a som tam, and add the ฿50 khao tom if the night is still going. The late markets of the region are mapped dish by dish in our night market food guide.

Planning a Southeast Asia food trip

Seasons, transport, money and how long

When to go: Vietnam's tropical storm season runs from May to November, according to the UK Foreign Office, so check forecasts before booking Hanoi and Huế. Bangkok flooded in late September. Read the Thailand advice the week you fly.

Getting around: Both Bangkok markets sit on the MRT, and Maxwell has four stations nearby. Hanoi's Bát Đàn is in the Old Quarter. The rest of the cards are short rides inside their cities.

Money: Ốc Oanh takes cash only, per its Michelin entry. Carry small notes in baht and dong for stalls, and set the figures here against the menu before you order, because Mia's Huế prices are undated and the Penang, Singapore and Saigon cards carry none. Cards are worth having for hotels and the occasional restaurant, but a market plate at ฿60 is not the place to find out your card is declined.

Booking: Stalls and markets take no bookings. The listing for Ốc Oanh gives a direct number for the restaurant, which is the only booking route I found. Treat hours as unconfirmed on every Needs confirming card, and for the two Bangkok markets look at the weather before you commit an evening.

How long: Three nights buys Bangkok, three buys Penang, and two each suit Hanoi, Huế and Singapore. The Vietnam food guide shows how to chain the Vietnamese stops.

Safety: The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel within 20km of the Thailand-Cambodia border. Its Malaysia page has no Penang warnings. Its Singapore page says drug use in your system on arrival means refusal of entry or arrest.

12SE ASIA

The bottom line

Land hungry in Bangkok

Go to Bangkok first. No other city here matches its range, its prices and its hours at once, and the flooding is a reason to check the news before you fly, not a reason to cancel. Add Penang if you can spare three days, and give Hanoi your mornings. Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Huế and Chiang Mai repay shorter stops. Wherever you land, put one very early or very late meal in the plan.

Land hungry in Bangkok and leave through Penang.

Before you go

Which is the best food city in Southeast Asia?

Bangkok, on this ranking. It wins on range, price and hours: Destination Thailand lists plates from ฿60 at Huai Khwang, and the market runs until 4am or 5am. Penang is second for four communities' cooking in one old port, and Hanoi third for its single-dish shops. Bangkok's late-September flooding is the one caveat to check.

Can you still visit Bangkok after the September floods?

At last report, yes, with checks. The UK Foreign Office said on 28 September that all 50 districts were disaster-affected. Thailand's tourism authority said on 29 September that conditions had improved and the BTS, MRT and main tourist areas were running. Look at both pages the week you fly.

Is Penang or Singapore better for food?

Penang ranks higher here for the cooking itself: nasi kandar, asam laksa and noodles from separate communities in one old port. Singapore's UNESCO-listed hawker centres suit travellers who want an easy start, with single-dish specialists under one roof at Maxwell. I could not source prices for either, so compare costs first.

Is Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City better for food?

Hanoi ranks higher here because its best-known shops specialise: Bát Đàn serves phở and little else, in a city with nearly 700 phở shops as of 2023. Ho Chi Minh City is stronger on layered southern dishes such as hủ tiếu Nam Vang, with its Khmer and Chinese roots, and on late seafood along Vĩnh Khánh Street.

How much does street food cost in Southeast Asia?

Sourced prices on this list: ฿60 to ฿120 a plate at Huai Khwang, 55,000₫ to 70,000₫ for phở at Bát Đàn (about $2.10 to $2.70), 25,000₫ to 35,000₫ for bún bò at Mệ Kéo and ฿30 to ฿35 for khao soi at Khun Yai. I could not confirm current prices in Penang, Singapore or Ho Chi Minh City.

Why is Manila not on the list?

Manila appears on VnExpress International's 2026 list of nine Asian food cities, but specific kitchens there could not be verified, so it is out rather than guessed. Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia are not ranked either, because the research behind this list was limited to the seven cities above.
